021: Innovation has No Historical Reference Point
Think about the nature of innovation and its literal meaning. Innovation is a breakthrough, transformation, change, a revolution. It is something being created that hasn't existed like it is now ever before. Something new is coming into the world.
"Innovation has no historical reference points." - Gary Vaynerchuck
This quote came to me from GaryVee on an episode of #AskGaryVee, and I love it. Innovation is the process of creating something completely new with no basis for it succeeding. It should technically have every reason to fail; there is no evidence for it ever working. Most people will always doubt a new invention, or method, or idea because that is the smart thing to do. Innovation is not always right, in fact, it probably fails most of the time. But it is also the driving force (the fuel) of change in the world. Innovation is bold and it challenges the norms people set in place for what's around them. Nobody realistically loves innovation because it goes against the fundamentals of human nature. We are built to be naturally as lazy as possible. We need to conserve energy to survive. In whatever form innovation takes, it challenges our notions of what we have already accepted in our lives. But the silver lining is always there. Innovation is the fuel of change!

Historical references (data) will most likely be considered the most valuable asset of the century. And that is probably correct; the more understanding you can derive from information, the more personal power and influence you have in the digital age. But what I am talking about neglects data and this type of knowledge. Using data is like an informed guess. Innovation is pure creativity, it follows almost no rules or guidelines. If you want to be innovative you have to do what no one else has done before. You can study what game-changing people have done in the past, but there are no reference points for the next innovation. Amazing! It is an open playing field. In my opinion, the innovations that tends to stick and make an impact in society are the ones that can seamlessly be introduced to improve peoples lives. If you have to have make a 10 million marketing campaign to convince people they need your product or service, you will bring in revenue but it won't change the game. An innovation should be almost silently put into work and let it's success and growth speak for itself.
