017: How Cool is Cloud Computing

The business world and economy at large is moving out of the information age and into the data driven age. The information age existed largely in the 20th century as the motive to power in the world; whoever could control the most amount of information could have the most power. With the rise of the internet and an economy that integrates technology into every aspect of itself the world is now giving way to the data age. Instead of locked access to information (think of selling encyclopedia's for revenue), companies now collect data to market individually to consumers. The more data a person can have (through sharing information freely), the stronger a person or corporation can become.

The internet is revolutionizing the world, and with the importance of data worldwide now the cloud has become very popular. I love the idea of cloud computing. It's amazing that instead of storing an entire package of data and application on your own computer, you can store that on a different server and only pay as you use it. Cloud computing consists of two parts which are the front end (for the user) and the back end (which does all the work). The only thing a user has to do on the front end is access the internet and log into the servers on the cloud. The back end of the cloud uses computers, servers, and database storage centers. Centralizing data, software, and applications in one place has so many advantages. You can most notably access them anywhere in the world, but more importantly instead of paying for say 1TB of storage on your computer, you only pay for what you use with the cloud. The cloud is ultra flexible and dynamic! Also, in a company setting you do not have to pay for, download, and update software every time an upgrade is needed. Streamlining information is so easy when everything is networked together.
