One of the local gems of Toledo, my personal favorite spot to take a date, and world renowned museum of art is free admission every day! Only closed Monday's, The Toledo Museum of Art is a public museum endowed by the government, and generously supported by some of the old and most successful families in Toledo (i.e. the Libbey's from Libbey glass). This museum is run by the sweetest souls and has amazing art. Every time I go in I get lost in the maze of corridors, find new favorite pieces, and marvel at some actually interesting art.
Turning left or right is the first decision in the museum ... taking you to 19th century oil canvases or Ancient Egyptian relics. There even has been Egyptian mummies on display here at one point in time. Winding through the corridors I always begin to relearn my personal taste in art, how art evolved through different time periods and countries, and the important roles it played through time. Everything from 30-foot-long 5th century Chinese scrolls, to barrier bending modern art, to my favorite style of 19th century American luminism can be found throughout this place. It's one of the most incredible museum's to spend an afternoon inside. There's even a glass pavilion and showroom across the street that showcases pieces of glass artwork and hosts small events. My favorite room in the museum is tucked away in the back of it's corridors. I only ever find it by luck-of-the-turn, and turning up inside of puts the biggest smile on my face. This room is a French cloister room that represents a courtyard type of feel under a fake sky. The sky is made with deep rich blue colors and feels almost better than being outside; it's a refreshing breath of fresh air after being lost in the museum for a couple hours. Also a fantastic place to dance.
The Toledo musuem of art is set up beautifully, extremely well versed, and overflowing with intricacy where ever you're looking. I highly recommended a visit there if you ever pass through the Glass City.
