005: Summer sun and travels

I woke up to play a round of ole ball and hole this morning at 8am, and am writing this on a flight into Detroit. I'm amazed, to say the least, at how fast we can travel across the country inside sunrise and sunset. I spent a splendid day at the beach under the sun and will fall asleep in the glass city later tonight (Toledo, OH). Like a good game of Tetris, everything seems to be falling right into place. Myrtle Beach has spectacular golf courses down its entire coast line. Living in Murrells Inlet, I played the front 9 of a local course called Blackmoor. Waking up with the sun, like I talked about in my recent post "50 things I find awesome", is one of my favorite things to do. Teeing off early in the morning while the sun is set just under the tree line, birds are swooping through the fairway, and the sound of the day picking up is nothing but blissful. There's also a mental game in golf I'm teaching myself to always love. Once I learned to put my swing to muscle memory it's simply a game of small tweaks and not fucking with myself. One thing I was taught that helps with playing consistent is "always play on your own team" meaning don't beat yourself up. I also try to learn something with every hole I play. Whether it's my approach to the ball, the speed of my back swing, practice shots, or just rhythm of breathing. Nonetheless, playing a quick round in the AM is a great way to start the day.

A relaxing day at the beach can never be overlooked too. I had an absolute blast at Garden City beach today. Swimming in the waves, throwing a strong frisbee during low tide, and sitting under the sun is therapy for the weak. The sun's doing some good stuff. Now being on a flight back to the Midwest, for the first time in over a year, I can't help but feel my heart through my chest. As deep as South Carolina moves into my life I could never forget the little part of the Midwest by Lake Erie I called home for so long. The Midwest is a great place with great people; really the foundation of modern America. The humble and hardworking people there can't be beaten. Traveling on these summer days can't do much more than put a smile on my face. Spending time in the fairway, in the sand, with old friends, and in old places is what it's all about.
