Opinion: We Are America? ft. John Cena
John Cena just uploaded his take on American patriotism and everyone seems to have fallen in love with it.
I’m not the least bit fan of sharing political opinions but from watching this video it seems like people have misplaced the philosophy of a strong country (And for the love of me just skip this if you are easily offended).
The message of this video is saying the right things in the worst way. Cena is attempting a patriotic speech to explain what unifies and makes America so great. He does that by talking entirely about what makes up different. Besides defining patriotism beautifully, the only thing he does is split up all 319 million Americans into their special categories (literally listening them off for 90 seconds). The video is uniting people through their differences rather than similarities ... and that is buffoonery. I don't believe one person is saying to push people’s race, gender, sex, religion, or handicap under the rug. Differences make people unique ... we know that.
Through the past century societies have shamed the differences of people. In 2016 they are now trying to celebrate those differences. See that the focus is still on differences, not similarities? And issues on race, gender, sex, religion are still strong? The human spirit, love of life, sense of belonging keeps us together. Categorizing people on skin color doesn't unify us. I think instead of celebrating differences America needs to celebrate similarities. If the argument of how we are different stops we might be able to celebrate what is holding America together. Families, relationships, friendships, and unification builds a country stronger. Talking about how there are enough LGBT’s to fill Virginia does not. I really do think John Cena means well, but the delivery is all wrong.
He says, “Labels don’t devalue us they help define us”. Why do we need to define people, why not just start enjoying being with them? Shining a spotlight on something will never give it less attention. Building friendships, meeting new people, and celebrating the greatest country on Earth makes talks of race/gender/sexuality irrelevant. Love someone because they add to your life not because of their label. Live with diversity instead of watching it under a microscope. Let’s get on with it already
